Since 2018 we have contributed significantly to the waste management domain through commentary on policy matters as well on ground implementation through partnerships. Multiple SDGs are connected to waste management and we have played a pioneering role in most instances through our practice.
In collaboration with JSW Foundation, we have set up pioneering waste management systems in two village clusters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. These projects have demonstrated solutions to manage daily household waste effectively.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has approximately 1,000 villages. The rural beauty of these villages is marred by the sight of overflowing community garbage bins, burning waste, littered roadsides, dogs and other vermin taking over, and rag pickers foraging for items of economic value.
With financial support from JSW Foundation, we worked at Vasind and Dolvi and set up systems that have become talking points in the respective regions and serve as very practical and doable guides for other villages to emulate. The projects provide clear thumb rules for the amount of effort required to collect and manage waste at a unit level of 1,000 families.
Both villages have JSW Steel factories in the vicinity.
We have made wonderful new friends in the process, provided deeply satisfying and educational employment opportunities, and received appreciation from the community.
These projects align with several SDG goals, while also tackling plastic pollution and helping mitigate air pollution and climate-harming emissions. We believe our work in waste management does more for ecology, considering that all garbage dumping typically happens in eco-sensitive areas. Responsible waste management contributes more to the well-being of trees and forests than many tree plantation drives.
